Ice Cream Bean Tree (Inga Edulis)

(6 reviews) Write a Review

The Ice Cream Bean tree, scientifically known as Inga edulis, is a fast-growing tropical tree that produces a unique and delicious fruit. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, the tree is cherished for its large, flat, and elongated seed pods, which contain creamy, sweet, and cotton-like pulp surrounding the seeds. The pulp has the consistency of cotton candy but it tastes like vanilla ice cream.

The Ice Cream Bean tree boasts an umbrella-like canopy of glossy tropical leaves, providing ample shade in its native habitat. The tree's presence adds a touch of tropical elegance to its surroundings, making it a favorite among landscapers and garden enthusiasts in suitable climates. During the flowering season, the Ice Cream Bean tree has clusters of fragrant, small white flowers that attract pollinators, contributing to the biodiversity of its ecosystem. The subsequent development of the distinctive seed pods, ranging from 6 to 12 inches in length, adds an ornamental element to the tree.

Ice Cream Bean trees prefer a warm climate as they thrive in tropical conditions, but they can also be grown indoors if necessary. Its adaptability to various soil types makes it a versatile choice for gardens, provided it receives proper care and maintenance. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Ice Cream Bean tree also serves ecological purposes, as its nitrogen-fixing roots contribute to soil enrichment. The Ice Cream Bean tree is a nitrogen-fixing tree through a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria known as rhizobia. The ability of the Ice Cream Bean tree to fix nitrogen contributes to soil fertility, making it an important species in ecosystems and agroforestry systems where nutrient cycling is essential.

At Tyler Farms, we grow our plants the old-fashioned way: no pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers, and we only use all-natural fertilizers like worm castings and fish emulsion.

Trees are shipped in 3-inch reusable plastic pots and approximately 4 to 8 inches tall. They are seedlings.

    Delicious and Easy to Grow

This tree is a fantastic addition to our garden. It grew quickly and started producing pods. The taste of the pods is unique and sweet, reminiscent of vanilla ice cream. The only reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five is because it requires a bit of space to grow properly. Otherwise, it’s been a delightful addition to our home garden.

The ice cream bean tree is a unique addition to my garden. The pods are large, and the sweet, cotton-candy-like flesh inside is a real treat. The tree itself is quite attractive, with its lush foliage. I love sharing the pods with friends and family – they’re always amazed by the flavor!

This is by far my favorite tree. It produces delicious pods that taste like vanilla but feels like cotton candy AND the tree actually helps the soil. I planted several of these in my orchard to help out my fruit trees. Thank you for the speedy delivery!
